Bright Horizons Family Solutions and Kids Online America Team Up to Bring New Family Internet Service to Leading Corporations
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2000--
Four Million Families Available to Receive KOLA(TM)
Family Internet Service
Kids Online America, Inc. (www.kola.net) and its flagship product KOLA (tm), a safe, smart and fun family Internet service, and Bright Horizons Family Solutions (NASDAQ:BFAM), the nation's leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, today announced a partnership to distribute KOLA to Bright Horizons' 220 corporate partners, including 68 of the Fortune 500 companies. This partnership paves the way for more than four million employees and their families with pre-school and school-age children to receive KOLA.
In addition to distributing to Bright Horizons' corporate partners, KOLA will become the exclusive online service to Bright Horizons' 300 Family Centers, making KOLA available in all the child care centers and to all enrolled families as well as Bright Horizons employees, totaling more than 175,000 potential users. As part of the deal, Bright Horizons has also made a strategic financial investment in KOLA, and CEO Roger Brown will join the KOLA board of directors.
"The parents who use our centers and our corporate clients recognize the power of the Internet to bring information to the fingertips of children," said Roger Brown. "However, we need to ensure that the content is safe and appropriate. KOLA creates that safe place for children. The Internet provides Bright Horizons with an extraordinary opportunity to deliver new and innovative services to the employee population. These programs and services will help both teachers and working parents better understand the development of children and provide them with an enriched and safe educational experience. A family-friendly Internet service is the first step in expanding our offerings, and we are pleased to have KOLA as our partner in delivering this new and exciting benefit to our clients."
The deal represents new territory in work/life benefits and is a significant step for both Bright Horizons and KOLA. For Bright Horizons, the partnership is the first step in a comprehensive strategy to incorporate the Internet and technology into educational programs and school readiness efforts for children. It will also allow the company to expand work/life offerings for its clients. KOLA will begin marketing the service this summer to Bright Horizons' blue-chip clientele in preparation for launching the service this fall.
"The Internet is an incredibly powerful resource that kids can use to learn, communicate and have fun," said Stephen Valerie, founder and CEO of KOLA. "They need freedom to explore and discover this vast online world safely. KOLA has raised the bar when it comes to Internet safety by creating an environment where accountability is the standard. Through our strategic partnership with Bright Horizons, KOLA will be poised to form partnerships with leading corporations to assure that only verified employees or members can sign up, thereby increasing the trust factor, reducing the likelihood of improper behavior online, and giving parents tremendous peace of mind."
The KOLA Family Internet Service
KOLA's mission is to deliver the best of the Internet to kids and their families. The KOLA Family Internet service creates a safe and engaging Internet experience through quality content, community and security. KOLA gives children and their parents access to age-appropriate material on the Internet and the security of communicating with kids of their own age in private online communities. KOLA was designed from the ground up to create high-trust, private online communities, and as a result, surpasses the standards set by the recent Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
--Content -- KOLA offers the best of the Internet's educational and entertainment content--thousands of sites-- KOLA's editorial staff works closely with an Editorial Advisory Council (EAC) composed of 14 award-winning educators from all over the U.S. to help choose children's content and develop standards for quality and age-appropriateness.
--Community -- KOLA creates safe online communities by building a membership base from families of leading corporations, civic organizations, government agencies and schools. Kids and families can enjoy tailored content, exchange secure e-mail, meet, chat and interact with friends and surf the Internet safely all within their own age-appropriate worlds: KOLA Kids (to age 7); KOLA Junior (8 to 10); KOLA Teen (11 to 13); KOLA Senior (14 to 17); and KOLA Parent.
--Security -- KOLA is available only to verifiable members, eliminating the risk of contact with anonymous users. KOLA uses a mixture of technology, human supervision, and flexible parental controls to provide a safer and more rewarding Internet experience for all family members by promoting the good--fun communities and quality content--and blocking the bad--inappropriate Web sites and inappropriate contact with anonymous users.
KOLA also provides parents with flexible controls over their family's online experience. Using KOLA's parental controls, parents select particular Web sites that children can access, specify which non-KOLA members are approved for e-mail correspondence and even determine an "e-allowance" for online spending. In addition, a site alert feature enables parents to report questionable Web sites, while built in feedback mechanisms allow parents to make content recommendations.
